Biography

Evan Matthews is A/ Lecturer in Physical Activity and Health Promotion; Co-programme Lead BSc Public Health and Health Promotion in the Department of Sport and Exercise Science, School of Health Sciences. His teaching focus includes modules related to, 'Physical activity and health promotion', 'Mental health and mental illness', and 'Research methods', 'Statistics and data analysis'. 

Evan has particular research interests in health behaviours and marginalised population groups, such as those with severe mental illness, substance use disorder and intellectual disability. He also has a particular interest in methods of service user inclusion in research and implementation research. His work has been presented at conferences such as the World Congress in Psychiatry (World Psychiatric Association) and the Society for Mental Health Researchers. 

Evan completed his PhD in 2019/2020 in the School of Health Science (WIT) under supervision of Dr Suzanne Denieffe (WIT) and Dr Mary Cowman (WIT). Following doctoral studies, Evan held the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Department of Nursing and Healthcare (WIT), and Research Lead with the Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit, South-East (HSE) for 2 years. During this time Evan was also the coordinator of the CARE Collaborations initiative (WIT/NMPDU) which funds nursing and midwifery postgraduate research in the southeast region. 

Evan is currently engaged in a number regional community initatives, including: 

  •  St John’s Community Hospital Enniscorthy: Healthy Campus Committee (>€20,000 secured from Healthy Ireland, Healthy Campus Initiative, HSE)
  • Invited panel member for CYPSC Waterford (currently leading white paper on JIGSAW services for Waterford)

Previously, Evan was Assistant Lecturer in the School of Humanities (WIT) on the Higher Certificate in Custodial Care, which is a collaborative programme with the Irish Prison Service.
