I am an accomplished, creative academic leader with an international reputation and multi-sector experience. I am also a recognised expert on the strategic shift towards digital business across multiple sectors with a proven ability to lead change and build new capacities on the national and international stage. My leadership style is solution-oriented and people-centred, and I am adept at forging, growing and sustaining new relationships with large communities and external partners.
Senior Lecturer, Waterford Institute of Technology, 1989-current
As senior academic and director of the INSYTE Centre, my role is to:
Scholarship and Publications
I have published over 150 peer-reviewed publications including 3 edited books, 4 edited international journal special issues and 29 journal articles and book chapters. I am editor of a leading international journal and on the editorial board or review board for 3 other journals.
I have successfully supervised or examined 11 PhDs and dozens of masters’ by research studies, including 6 PhD’s at WIT.
Leadership of Multi-Sector National and International Networks
I have extensive experience setting up, coordinating, steering, and promoting local and international networks in science, technology and society, bringing together interdisciplinary researchers, practitioners and entrepreneurs to examine the potential and impacts of digital technologies.
Complementing my work in the Financial Services sector, I am active in multi-sectoral projects and networks with Irish industry. A signature project included the Innovation Relay Network for “Trans-National Technology Transfer (TTT)” funded by Enterprise Ireland and the IRC (under “The Pathway for European Technology”) to provide innovation supports to Irish firms.
International Networks
I sit on the Technical Board of the International Federation of Automation and Control (IFAC), a community of 50 countries with many thousands of members organised into national bodies and technical committees. I also sit on the Irish IFAC and Irish Control Systems Society (ICSS) boards. At the 20th Triennial IFAC World Congress in 2017, in recognition of almost two decades of leadership, I was elected as Coordinating Committee (CC) Chair and promoted to the Technical Board with special responsibility for social factors in control and automation. As CC Chair my direct reports are chairs and vice-chairs of 5 technical committees. These are internationally recognised experts in Asia, Europe, and the USA.
In 2020 I received the “IFAC Outstanding Service Award” for international leadership in my field.
Prior to my most recent IFAC appointment, I was the elected Chair of the Technical Committee (TC) for Technology and International Stability. I led transformational change, renaming, rebranding, and re-energising the community, more than doubling the membership, and expanding into 20 countries, reorganising our structures and creating new working groups and forums.
In addition to my mandate as a change agent, responsibilities included organising international activities, coordinating with the technical board and secretariat, and providing academic and professional leadership. I brought 2 international standing conferences to Ireland establishing and chairing both the national and international organising committees and securing necessary funding.
I am associate editor for 3 IFAC World Congresses, Chair for Industry for the upcoming “TECIS 2018” conference in Azerbaijan and honorary Chair of the “TECIS 2019” Conference in Bulgaria. I have also had leadership roles on 20 other international professional and academic bodies.
