Personal profile

Dr Rebecca Power is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) and a Marie Skłodowska Curie Action (MSCA) Research Fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). She holds a BA (Honours) Degree in Health Promotion and a Research Masters in sedentary behaviour and physical activity. In 2019, she completed a PhD in nutrition for cognitive health at Waterford Institute of Technology.

Research Interests

Dr Power is interested in the role of dietary patterns and specific nutrients in maintaining brain health, improving cognitive performance and reducing the risk of neurological diseases, namely Alzheimer’s disease.

To date, the research that Dr Power has been involved in has demonstrated improvements in cognitive performance in cognitively healthy older adults and individuals with mild cognitive impairment following supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids, carotenoids and vitamin E. Positive outcomes (e.g. in mood) have also been demonstrated in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Going forward, and as part of her MSCA fellowship, Dr Power aims to advance our understanding of the parts of the brain and neural networks that are strengthened by specific foods using state-of-the-art methodologies and technologies from the fields of nutritional epidemiology and cognitive neuroscience available at UIUC.
