Biography
Sarah Kernaghan is a postgraduate student within the PMBRC and the Department of Science, researching in the field of Green Chemistry, Flow Chemistry and Biocatalysis.
Her PhD project involves researching green and sustainable strategies for the pharmaceutical industry. Her PhD project title is the "Green Synthesis of Pharmaceutically Relevant β-Hydroxy Ketones using Biocatalysis in Batch and Flow". She began her PhD in September 2021 under the supervision of Dr Claire Lennon, Dr Michael Kinsella, and Dr Tracey Coady.
Sarah completed her undergraduate degree at QUB in Biomedical Science and returned to complete her MRes in Translational Medicine, specialising in drug discovery and cancer medicine. Both degrees involved a medicinal chemistry research project, where small molecule inhibitors were synthesised to target specific enzymes associated with malaria and cancer.
Before joining SETU, Sarah gained pharmaceutical industry experience while working in the R&D department of Norbrook Laboratories Ltd.
