Biography
Sreeraj is a postgraduate researcher in the Ocular Therapeutics Research Group of PMBRC, Department of Science, Waterford Institute of Technology.
The project entitled " Investigating the role of glatiramer acetate in modulating immune effector cells in a model of wet age-related macular degeneration" is supervised by Dr. Sweta Rani, co-supervised by Dr. Laurence Fitzhenry, Dr. Lee coffey, Dr. Simon Kaja, Dr. Marc Cerreda-Giminez and Mentors Dr. Ann Logan and Dr. David Kent.
Project background
AMD is a multifactorial disease that progresses with age. It affects day-to-day life due to blurred or reduced central vision. The current treatments can only maintain the state of vision at which it is diagnosed, but painful injections and frequent visits to the eye doctor are part of that. It could worsen with time and restoring vision is a big challenge in the case of AMD, making it one of the leading causes of blindness in the world.
This project will explore the mechanism of action of glatiramer in retinal damage repair, its effect on choroidal neovascularization, and the immune system in an animal model. It will contribute hugely towards our understanding of the pathogenesis of wet AMD and the role played by the immune system in potentially counteracting this progression. The data generated from this study will provide an insight into curing AMD.
Funding
The project is funded by the Irish Research Council under the Enterprise partnership scheme with Experimentica Ltd, Finland.
