N2 - Wireless sensor networks are often power and/or energy limited. Thus it is very important to statically and (whenever possible) dynamically tune the communication protocol parameters for given performance and quality of service requirements. This paper is devoted to energy consumption optimization by tuning the physical layer parameters of the 802.15.4 Zigbee standard, depending on various application scenarios. We propose a mathematical formulation and an algorithm to optimize parameters such as bit error rate, SNR, number of repeater nodes, distance between repeaters, and optimal neighbor selection at different environmental and interference noise levels.
